The Odnashdoi Utrom

ou

The Odnashdoi Utrom is a faction for the The Red Star Setting of d20 modern. The Odnashdoi Utrom are a young movement dedicated to the Commonwealth, using their mastery of information technology and kasting to manipulate their enemies.

Origins

When the U.R.R.S. collapsed, Lenja Oron was an elite student in her last year at the Red Fleet Academy. Nokgorkan in origin but deeply loyal to the U.R.R.S., she was faced with some difficult choices. She had always seen herself as a walker between the worlds of her traditional home and the progressive Union. When the war in Nokgorka became inevitable, she gathered a cabal of trusted academy comrades and set out on a forbidden ritual – a call on the Spirit Realm to receive a long-term divination.

The ritual succeeded beyond Lenja’s wildest imaginations. When the protocols took effect she was overwhelmed with impressions. Her comrades watched in horror as she started clawing out her own eyes, ripping her ears into a mangle of flesh while bleeding from every orifice of her body. Before Lenja died, she uttered only two words:

“Odnashdoi Utrom …” – One Morning …

Then her comrades received a badly fragmented transpathic copy of her visions.

Years of Silence

Fortunately for the followers of Lenja the Komissariat was busy at other fronts at that time and their gross violation of regulations went without serious consequences. They tried once, and only once, to take the message to the authorities. But when they told their superiorities of a devastating strike against the W.T.A. and of the W.T.A. repeating the Union’s mistakes in Al’Istaan, of the Rise of the Lands of the Dragon and the renaissance of the Commonwealth they were dismissed as crazy children.

The Odnashdoi Utrom, as they began calling themselves, went underground and bided their time.

The Imperial City Bombing

With the Imperial City Bombing, the world changed once more in a way nobody suspected. When the authorities of the Commonwealth started their own intelligence operations regarding the issue, documentation of Lenja’s prophecies reappeared and the Odnashdoi Utrom became most wanted. But the Odnashdoi Utrom were no small cabal any more – they had become a movement.

The Odnashdoi Utrom Today

Going public, the Odnashdoi Utrom declared their undivided loyalty to Citadel and offered to go into the field to counter the upcoming civic revolutions. The Odnashdoi Utrom are no paramilitary unit, but have developed a highly competent and scrupulous network of infokasters and propagandists. It is suspected that the Odnashdoi Utrom are responsible for feeding false visions into foreign infokaster networks and that they may even have a low-key operation going on in the Spirit Realm. The authorities are well aware of the grossly illegal kasting practiced by the Odnashdoi Utrom, but so far the movement has proven to valuable to be confronted.

The Odnashdoi Utrom and the Spirit Realm

When Lenja kast her protocol, she actually accessed the Spirit Realm in the middle of Imbohl’s Shard. One of Imbohl’s guardian spirits stumbled upon her after a few moments, and chased her into the Soul Storm. There she learned of the Ironhold and many other secrets of the past and present and even gained some insight into the future.

Lenja was not ready for such an experience by far. But she understood that death was not the end of existence and that power was to be found in the afterlife. Half-insane, she killed herself and used much of her own P.H.E. to leave a legacy behind.

Lenja remains a weak free spirit, but her mental state is dim at best and insane at worst. Her legacy provided the Odnashdoi Utrom with access to the Spirit Realm, but actually the inner cabal is more occupied with guarding the spirit of Lenja then gaining strength from the Mirror World. Still, Lenja is a valuable patron if she can be coaxed into taking purposeful action.

Concerning Imbohl’s doings, Lenja understood the crimes he inflicted unto the Spirit Realm, but she also believes these were a necessary evil and her loyalty was fortified – and the Odnashdoi Utrom follow her in this.

Lenja Oron

Lenja Oron is a shadow of her former self in more than one way. Once brilliant and wise beyond her young age, her mind is shattered now and her thoughts and utterances are rarely coherent. Still she retains a strange beauty which seems to have been only increased by the traces of suffering in her face. She may have become an immortal, but among the immortals she is a debilitated child. If Lenja was not protected by some of the older immortals and the Odnashdoi Utrom, she would have fallen prey to the stalkers of the Spirit Realm long ago.

* These stats reflect Lenja’s usual state of mind. Under unusual circumstances, she might have a moment of lucidity: add 1d10 to Int and 1d6 to Wis.

Odnashdoi Utrom Activist

The main body of the Odnashdoi Utrom consists of Sorceresses or Sorcerer trained as infokasters. Other classes may flock to the Odnashdoi Utrom and are used in various functions, but to be recognized as full member one has to be able to cast the protocols the Odnashdoi Utrom use daily: cooperative reinforcement and transpathic signal.

Protocols: Burst voltage protocol, cooperative reinforcement protocol, map protocol, stealth protocol, transpathic signal protocol; reenact protocol; interception protocol*

Possessions: Protocol-enhanced notebook computer

* The interception protocol is unique to the Odnashdoi Utrom. Many people would like to have access to it, but those who try to steal it often find their efforts ruined by the use of exactly this protocol (see below).

INTERCEPTION PROTOCOL (ICP)
Odnashdoi Utrom
Nonlethal Damage: 1d6

Component Purchase DC: 24

Kast Check DC: 20

Kasting Time: 1 full round

Range: Personal

Area: Kast check result x 10m

Duration: Concentration

This protocol has two effects. First, it allows the kaster to sense any information-transmitting protocol (cooperative reinforcement, jump information, map, reenact, transpathic detonator and transpathic signal) cast from within or targeted at the area of the interception protocol.

Second, it allows the kaster to then try to intercept the protocol being kast. The kaster of the interception protocol has to kast the same protocol she wishes to intercept. If she succeeds, the information-transmitting protocol is scrambled and its effect is nullified. If she even achieves a higher Kast check result than the original kaster, she may falsify the information received by the original caster as she sees fit.

Overcast: Doubles the area of effect at Grade I, triples it at Grade II, etc.
