Hekabe motherships are relics from the Dark Age of Technology. Over the millenia since their construction, not only the schematics of the class but the very knowledge to recreate the ships’ most central feature and function has been lost. The few Hekabes still in existence are the very last of their breed.
Massive as these ships are, they lack in usable space or power, in speed, manoeuvrability, weaponry and armour. A lone Hekabe may appear a useless giant cripple, an enigmatic folly of the ancients. However, motherships were never intended to ever operate alone. All the myriad tasks a starship might be called upon to perform, a Hekabe’s children were expected to handle, for the mothership is able to carry a maximum of fifteen vessels of up to frigate size docked along its giant hull. By the long lost technological miracles of the Hekabe’s design, her warp engines and Gellar field will propel and protect her through the immaterium along with her charges, allowing whole flottilas of non-warp capable intra-system vessels to be carried from one solar system to the next – the true purpose for which the Hekabe-class was once created.
