Goryn – a dragon for The Red Star

Dragons of June 3/x:

Goryn, a first character based on last week’s the conversion ideas from Dragons of the Red Star.

Goryn is a Nokgorkan warlord who rose to power following the fall of Bahamut and the splintering of the Resistance. Although the politically savvy Goryn publicly anounced his commitment to the continued fight against the Red invaders, he and his fighters are little more than bandits who profit immensely from the current situation of the ravaged country. From his mountain lair, which along with his band is known only as the Hoard, he terrorizes large swathes of the countryside, seeking to expand his influence and enrich himself by kidnapping, extortion, smuggling of natural resources and plain plundering and robbery.

The Hoard is filled with the dredges of the wartorn Nokgorkan society, brutal murderers, disillusioned Resistance fighters, common criminals and opportunistic war profiteers (our 2012 article The Other Side of War might be worth checking out for possible advanced classes). Goryn keeps the members of this band in line not only by letting them have their – meagre – share of the profits, but also with a combination of his personal magnetism and the superstitious fear and reverence of his supernatural abilities. His minions even often go about spreading rumors of him being blessed with extraordinary powers by the spirits of the ancestors or even by the prophet himself. It is telling, however, that not a single priestess or shaman is to be found among the Hoard, and indeed, the desperate self-deception of these rumors is visibly written across the faces of those telling them.

Player characters may be confronted with Goryn in any number of ways. As members of the Red Fleet they could obviously be involved in operations to surpress his banditry and pacify his territory, culminating in an assault on his mountain stronghold. In the earliest phases, the characters could well be on the receiving end, perhaps with raids by Goryn where they are the defenders – or the victims – triggering the Red Fleet crackdown in the first place. Similarly, the Nokgorkan Resistance could also choose to do away with Goryn and the Hoard, which could be down to factional infighting, a genuine attempt at re-unifying and re-invigorating the Resistance, or even under the guidance of the priestesses in which case the revelation of Goryn’s draconic nature would have to come first. The disbanded Fifth Hook and its discredited investigators and terminators of unnatural threats could also start looking into Goryn, all the while facing their usual resource constraints. Finally, ambitious members of the Hoard may well try to ursurp Goryn’s mountain throne for themselves – after working their way up through the ranks and building their own powerbase, of course.
