“Glitter mines” is the nickname of a type of light anti-personnel mines which can be individually placed or scattered as submunition via cluster bombs or artillery shells. The name stems from the optical side effect of the protocols which are included in the brightly colored plastic casings of the mines, which are designed to cause an involuntary impulse to pick up and handle the mine. As typical military eye protection such as goggles and helmet visors reliably filter out these protocol signals, the effect is mostly limited to unprotected civilians, especially the inexperienced, curious and trusting among them.
The explosion of a glitter mine causes 2d6 points of concussion damage with a burst radius of 1m (Reflex DC 15). The mine is diminutive, weighs 0.1 kg and has a Purchase DC of 11 (Mil +3).
Due to their bright coloration and the protocols, glitter mines are extremely easy to detect (+5 to Spot and Search checks to detect the mine). A character who looks at a glitter mine without some sort of eye protection, has to succeed at a DC 11 Will save to not pick up the mine, in which case he is not entitled to a Reflex save against the mine’s damage. A character who is currently preoccupied with combat or a similar event calling for all his attention, is immune to this effect of the glitter mine for as long as the event is going on.
