River Pirates of the Ister
While the world in some regards became a safer place with the fall of the URRS and the end of the Ironhold between the transnationalist and internationalist blocks, in others it became less safe. The river piracy plagueing the Ister, one of the Great Continents main water ways, is one of the areas, where the world turned out to become less safe. Like other criminal bands, the pirates were first founded by former members of the militaries of the suddenly defunct internationalist block. In case of the Ister pirates, they made sure to inherit equipment stocks including rivercraft and heavy weapons from the river defense flotillas. To this day, this secures for them significant influence over the river, especially in those regions, where internal conflicts and corruption weaken legitimate governments.
The idea goes back to catching something about (alleged?) modern river piracy on the Danube while reading up on the previous The Red Star pirate article. As usual, finding a name then became the most difficult part for which I finally settled on the antique Ister. After that, it was just dialing up the threat posed by the pirates in line with The Red Star’s general megalomania and done.
