Having to deal with inadequate or defective equipment, being confronted with a lack of maintenance or supplies, or hunting for missing spares are common themes for military campaigns. To simulate this in The Red Star, the following house rules may be used:
Whenever a character rolls a natural 1 during a requisition check, the delivered equipment is faulty in some way and requires fixing or repair before it can be used.
When requisitioning equipment, a character may add up to +5 to the check. For each +1 added, the chance of receiving defective gear increases by 5% (i.e., on a natural 1 or 2 if taking a +1 modifier, natural 1-3 at +2, up to a natural 1-6 at the full +5).
While this rule limits defects to easily obtainable equipment with low Purchase DCs, it eliminates the need for additional rolls. If you prefer the option of high value gear being equally likely to be in a bad state, make the requisition check as normal followed by a separate d% roll to determine the state of any items received (with a basic 5% chance of defects, increased by an additional 5% for each +1 added to the check, as above).
