Science-gone-too-far in The Red Star (again):

Spectral Lobotomy

A spectral lobotomy is a procedure, which is sometimes performed on Immortals trapped in soulprisons. Its goal is to rob the spirit not only of its freedom but of its free will as well, reducing it to a mindless shade. Perhaps the only factors preventing the widescale employment of such methods are the required effort and resources as well as the risk of totally obliviating the spirit in the process, thus losing valuable PHE.

An Immortal who is in bonds within a soulprison may be subjected to spectral lobotomy. This deals 1d8 points of damage per level of the Immortal. If the damage is insufficient to consign the spirit to oblivion, it is transformed into a shade.
