For the sorceresses of the Red Fleet use of military-grade protocol sorcery is their daily routine. Despite this and despite the additional controls and the safety systems built into the protocols mistakes still are made and errors happen. Under the wrong circumstances, such may lead to catastrophic results:
If a sorceress rolls a natural 1 on a Kast check for a protocol and either loses consciousness due to protocol damage or tried to kast the protocol without the required components, the protocol fails and she also has to roll once on the following table:
d6 roll | Effect |
1 | Transpathic infarction: Protocol signals accumulate in the sorceress’ brain, blocking vital areas. The sorceress immediately falls to -9 hitpoints and is dying. If she succeeds at a DC 20 Fortitude save, she falls to -1 hitpoints instead but is still considered dying. |
2-3 | Psychic feedback: For the blink of an eye, the energy flow of the protocol is reversed and a part of the sorceress’ soul flows out of her. The sorceress takes 1d6 each of Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma damage. A successful DC 20 Will save will half this ability damage. |
4-6 | KPS glitch: The safety systems meant to protect the sorceress from the energy flowing through her body flicker. In addition to the non-lethal damage caused by the protocol, the sorceress takes the same amount of lethal damage. |
The GM may also implement more esoteric effects, maybe even positive ones. For example, the sorceress could trigger the effect of another protocol or spell, attract the attention of a denizen of the Spirit Realm, or be bodily transported to that plane of existence.
