Decorations of the Red Fleet – house rules for The Red Star

Amongst other things The Red Star Campaign Setting is a military RPG.

It provides copious amounts of information on aspects of the organization and structure of the Red Fleet as they relate to the characters and how it all changes with large scale developments of the setting such as the fall of the URRS.

It also establishes promotion within the ranks of the fleet as an additional reward mechanism for player characters.

Strangely, it does not cover another class of rewards that seem obvious within such a context: It ommits all mention of decorations and medals.

This article aims to rectify this.

In game terms, decorations give a bonus to reputation checks made to recognize their bearer. They might have other effects as well and these are noted in the decription of the individual decorations.

To earn a decoration a Red Fleet character first has to be eligible according to the decoration’s general description (GM’s call) as well as meet any prerequisites listed for that decoration. In addition, the character’s commanding officer has to succeed at a special requisition check. The DC of this check is listed in the description of the decoration. However, convincing the commanding officer to make this check may require a Diplomacy check or some other task in the first place.

Distinguished Fleet Service Medal
Awarded to soldiers of the Red Fleet for excellent performance in combat and political training and for bravery, selflessness, and other services shown during military service.

Prerequisites: Separate allegiances to the URRS and the Red Fleet
Requisition DC: 18
Reputation bonus: +2

Hero of the Red Star
This is the highest honorary title that can be given to soldiers of the Red Fleet or citizens of the URRS for an act of heroism.

Prerequisites: Allegiance to the state (the URRS or later on the Commonwealth); overcoming an encounter with an encounter level at least six levels higher than the character’s level – the outcome of this encounter has to directly affect the state
Requisition DC: 48
Reputation bonus: +10
special: Once per day, a bearer of this decoration may spend an Action Point and take a full round action to inspire his companions. All other characters may increase the size of their Action Die by one (so a d6 becomes a d8) for the remainder of the encounter.

Medal for Veterans of the Sorcery Corps
Awarded to sorceresses of the Red Fleet and the Kommissariat for 25 years of service.

Prerequisites: Red Fleet Sorceress
Requisition DC: 20
Reputation bonus: +3
special: Due to their extensive experience, bearers of this decoration gain a +1 bonus on Kast checks when supporting other sorceresses via the use of CRPs.

Order of Imbohl
The Order of Imbohl is one of the highest decoration given to both civilians and soldiers. It is awarded for outstanding service to the lands of the Red Star in defence and strengthening peace, industry and sorcery.

Prerequisites: Allegiance to the URRS
Requisition DC: 45
Reputation bonus: +8

Order of Valor
The Order of Valor is awarded to non-commissioned officers and enlisted soldiers of the Red Fleet for bravery in the face of the enemy.

Prerequisites: Rank Starshina or below
Requisition DC: 25
Reputation bonus: +3
special: If the character is later on promoted to Junior Lieutenant (or above), the reputation bonus from this decoration is reduced to +0 when dealing with other officers and increased to +5 when dealing with enlisted soldiers and non-commissioned officers. This is due to the different attitudes towards officers who have come up through the ranks.
