Josef – an artificical character for The Red Star

One thing to another. In the German version of yesterday’s article we shortly brushed upon the idea of the Golem of Prague being a good fit for The Red Star, immediately leading to a demand for a more detailed write-up.

But what is there to write, really? The legend itself can be copied&pasted straight to The Red Star. No big modifications necessary.

The only thing we really need is a few names to keep with The Red Star’s approach of changing existing names of peoples, places, religions and so on, while still keeping them recognizable in some fashion (either by being similar to the original, by using (historical) synonyms, or by using evocative images).

The Golem can probably keep the name – Josef – it is sometimes attributed with. What we do need names for are Jews and the city of Prague.

Fortunately, dave already provided us with the first a few years back when he did his two articles on the Aragonese civil war (see here for the Ghosts of Aragon and the Brigades of Aragon): So Jews will be Yehudim. For the second we will also keep things simple and just use Prague’s common byname as its true name for The Red Star: So Prague will be the Golden City.

Done.

Okay, nearly done, have some notes on stats for good measure: Josef is a clay golem (see the SRD version of choice) with 18 HD and maximum hitpoints. In addition to all the usual abilities of a clay golem, he also possesses Fast Healing 5. A sucessful disarm attack, against which he receives a +8 bonus, can be used to snatch away the seal which is animating him, in which case he immediately and permanently turns into an inanimate lump of clay again (although he can be returned to live by reattaching the seal).

Done.
