Heroic Feats (Updates)

Heroic Swordsmanship
A while back I wrote Heroic Feats. While I still like this article very much, I noticed some flaws in the wording of the feats. For example, I forgot to cap the maximum ability increase to 20 and things like that.

I also got some new ideas in the meantime. A new feat which lets you focus on certain types of melee weapons. Some weapons get a stronger upgrade than others but that is by intent. Also, a new fighting style which provides an often requested feature, at least in my group.

So, some new stuff, some old stuff with errata, and this time everything also in German.

Additional Feats

Combat Expertise
Due to your rigorous training, you learned the intricacies of a particular fighting style. You gain the following benefits:

  • Increase your Strength, Dexterity or Constitution score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • You adopt a particular style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one Fighting Style option from any class. You can’t take a Fighting Style option more than once, even if something in the game lets you choose again.

Heroic Swordsmanship
Many renowned heroes and adventurers prefer the versatility of the sword. You follow their footsteps and gain the following benefits:

  • Increase one ability score of your choice by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • Whenever you declare an attack with a sword (shortsword, longsword, or greatsword), you may choose to deal slashing, bludgeoning or piercing damage instead of its normal damage type.
  • Longswords you wield have the finesse property.

Natural Aptitude
You just have a knack for one of your acquired skills. You gain the following benefits:

  • Choose one of your skill proficiencies. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make using the chosen proficiency. You cannot choose a skill that is already benefiting from a feature which doubles your proficiency bonus.
  • Increase the ability score associated with the chosen skill by 1, to a maximum of 20.

Weapon Specialist
You dedicated yourself to mastering one specific type of melee weapon. You gain the following benefits:

  • Choose any one type of melee weapon. If you are not proficient with that weapon, you gain proficiency with it. Depending on the weapon of your choice you might gain additional benefits.
  • If the weapon deals a d4 damage, you now deal d6 with it instead. Similarly, if the weapon deals a d6 normally, you now deal d8 with it instead.
  • If the weapon has versatile (d8), you treat it as haveing versatile (d10) instead. Similarly, if the weapon had versatile (d10) originally, you treat it as having versatile (d12) instead.
  • If the weapon is two-handed, you have +1 AC while wielding it in two hands.
  • If the weapon is light or finesse, you may perform one attack with it as a bonus action. You don’t add your ability modifier to the damage, unless that modifier is negative.
  • If the weapon has reach, you add 10 feet to your reach when attacking instead of 5 feet.

Additional Fighting Styles

Paladins add Phalanx Fighting to their option list of Fighting Styles, while Rangers add Tempo to theirs. Fighters add both styles to their list.

Phalanx Fighting. You may wield a two-handed reach weapon in one hand. While doing so, the weapon’s damage die is a d8.

Tempo. You are proficient in Initative which means that you add your proficiency bonus to Dexterity (Initative) checks.
