The origin and function of the magical powers of these outdated interfaceless electronic laboratory scales are unknown. Physically, the scales are decorated with a couple of simple magical symbols. Astrally, they register as magical but their aura does not reveal any further details.
When a piece of a character (such as a hair, a couple of nail clippings, a drop of blood or a cut ear) is weighed with the scales for the first time, the character may choose to immediately gain a new positive quality or to lose an existing negative quality.
If a new positive quality is gained, the character also gains a new negative quality of equal value (this has to be a single quality, not a group of qualities which add together to an equal value).
If an existing negative quality is removed, an existing positive quality of equal value is removed as well (this has to be a single quality, not a group of qualities which add together to an equal value).
This effect can only ever be achieved once per character.
Currently, the scales are in the possession of a Seattle talismonger.
