Urban Ranger – a new ranger archetype for D&D

Jumping Ranger

Ranger Archetype – Urban Ranger

Some Rangers do not follow the call of the wild but will use their talents within villages, towns and cities to help out their urban communities.

City Hunter
At the 3rd level, the city becomes your hunting ground. You gain the additional favored terrain ‘urban’ for your Natural Explorer feature, and the additional Favored Enemy ‘criminals’. The language you learn from criminals is the Thieves’ Cant (the 1st level rogue feature).

Mystic Parkour
At 7th level, you combine the discipline of parkour with nature’s magic. Whenever you perform a dash action, you ignore difficult terrain and may expand a Ranger spell slot. If you expanded a spell slot, you cast the spell associated with the level of the spell slot you expanded without the need for somatic, verbal or material components at the start of your dash. If the spell has a range of touch, you may only affect yourself.

Spell Level Spells
1st jump
2nd spider climb
3rd haste
4th dimension door
5th passwall

Combat in Motion
At 11th level, you can attack three times, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn and you move at least 10 feet between each of the attacks.

Move through the Crowd
At 15th level, you stop provoking opportunity attacks when you move outside of someone’s reach. In addition, you can move through spaces occupied by other creatures.

  1. As I said before: To me, the strong parkour theme makes for a nice and modern interpretation of the “urban ranger” idea.

  2. Love it.

I am also collecting my house rules into a document, and while it is not intended for publication (other than to be shared with my players) I am attaching copyright notices to them. Do you consider this covered by OGL, Creative Commons License, or some other license?
