Invoking the Desert – new shaman invocations for The Red Star

Kar Dathra Desert_1
Once again, a result of the German rpg-bloggers’ carnival, which for August follows the theme “Heatwave”.

A perfect fit for some new Nistaani invocations to use in an Al’Istaan campaign:

Kiss of the Desert Wind
Shaman Invocation (Nistaani)

Nonlethal Damage: 1d6
Kast Check DC: 15
Kasting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (Kast check result in meters)
Target: See text
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: See text
Sorcery Resistance: No

This invocation transforms the breath of the shaman into the breath of the desert itself, parchingly dry and hot, burning and melting what it touches.

Kiss of the Desert Wind has two versions. A shaman has to decide which version to use while kasting.

The first version deals 1d6 points of nonlethal damage to a single target within range + 1d6 points for every 10 full points of Kast check result. If the target fails a Fortitude save, he also becomes exhausted.

The second version can only be used by a shaman who possesses the Slivers on the Wind feat and is thus proficient with Sha-Osk pins. If the second version is chosen, the shaman may perform a single attack with Sha-Osk pins as part of Kasting the invocation. The shaman’s breath melts the Sha-Osk pins as they fly towards their target, splattering them with molten silver. This changes the damage type of the attack to fire and increases the damage die of the Sha-Osk pins from d4 to d8. Sha-Osk pins used in such a fashion are consumed in the attack and cannot be recovered.
If the Sha-Osk pins are directed at a target’s face using the Improved Slivers on the Wind feat, the DC of the Reflex save to escape permanent blindness is increased by +2 for every 10 full points of Kast check result.

Burning Sand
Shaman Invocation (Nistaani)

Nonlethal Damage: 1d12
Kast Check DC: 20
Kasting Time: 1 full round
Range: Medium (Kast check result x 4 meters)
Area: (Kast check result) x 10 meter radius circle, centering on spot of Kaster’s choosing
Duration: (Kast check result) x 1 round
Saving Throw: No
Sorcery Resistance: Yes

The shaman pours forth some of his ancestor’s burning hatred for those who would defile Al’Istaan into the very soil of the land, making the ground seethe and scorch.

All creatures and vehicles touching the ground within the area of effect of the invocation take 1d4 points of fire damage every round. They continue to take damage as long as they remain within the area. This damage is increased to 1d8 for creatures without some sort of protective footwear.

If the result of the Kast check was 40 or more, any mines or other explosives on or in the ground within the area of effect explode at the start of the fifth round of the invocation’s duration.
